TESTIMONIAL

WE NEED YOU!!

I became a volunteer at Theater Works in 2009.

I became a volunteer, and started as an usher. I have always loved theater, and thought this would be a good way for me to see shows at no cost to me. I learned that as a volunteer that I could “earn” tickets by contributing more hours to the theater. In this way, I was able to earn bring a friend with me to see the shows.

I decided to volunteer a bit more to make this happen. I saw that the costume shop needed some organization, to say the least! So, I dug into the bins of hats, clowns, munchkins, etc., and began to fold and tidy things up.  Needless to say, one thing led to another, and I organized the closet, measuring pants, and sport coats…………..this saved so much time for the designers as they could just go in there and check the tags for measurements, instead of having to do it for themselves.  And they could get back to doing what they do best…………designing those wonderful costumes!

After a weekend of 3 or 4 performances, you can just imagine how much makeup and sweat (stage lights sure are hot!) are on the costumes!  I began to wash or freshen up the costumes so that they would be ready to go and look good for the next weekend of performances.  And after a show closes, all those costumes need to be cleaned and returned to stock.

You always hear how volunteering is “so rewarding”.  I can tell you, when I attend a show now, I see it thru different eyes! When the curtain opens, and the actors start to enter the stage, I see each piece they are wearing, and know that I had a part in making this show happen.

I am inviting you to join our volunteer team here at Theater Works. As you can tell, there is no sewing required to work in the costume shop. If you do sew and want to help in construction of costumes we welcome you! Please contact Terry at tburns@theaterworks.org or call 623-466-6453.
